Healthscope and Teachers Health reach new agreement
Updated: 4 March 2025
Good news! We’ve reached an in-principle agreement with the Healthscope hospital group – our new contract is now being finalised.
Earlier this year, Healthscope moved to terminate their contract with us (and 22 other not-for-profit health funds). Since then, the Australian Health Services Alliance (AHSA) has been negotiating on our behalf to secure terms that provide both quality of care and value to members.
We know the recent uncertainty may have been concerning for those of you who stood to be impacted. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked towards this positive result.
Frequently asked questions
What does this outcome mean for me?
Teachers Health members will continue to be covered for treatment at all 38 Healthscope hospitals around Australia. In other words, Healthscope facilities will continue to be agreement hospitals.
At agreement hospitals you shouldn’t pay anything for your hospital accommodation other than the excess (if you have one). Exceptions could include certain high-cost medicines or non-medical things like TV, internet or phone use.
Could Teachers Health go out of contract with any other major hospital groups in the near future?
It’s rare for that to happen. Hospital contract negotiations happen regularly – whenever an existing agreement is due to expire. In most cases, the process unfolds seamlessly in the background.
With the trickier agreements, we keep you informed on progress. While negotiations may come close to the wire, they’re generally resolved before contracts have expired, or very soon afterwards!
How far did Teachers Health go towards meeting Healthscope’s terms?
While the finer details are still being worked out, we can say that the contract will represent value for members.
We always strive to achieve the balance between choice, quality care and affordability. In this case, we’re satisfied that’s been achieved; which is particularly important at a time when many Australians are facing cost of living pressures.
I switched to another fund. Can I transfer back?
Yes! You can come back at any time. We’re contacting members who have switched directly, but you can also contact us on 1300 728 188.
All health funds offer a minimum 30-day cooling-off period, so if you haven’t claimed during that time, you can get a full refund and transfer back to us.
If I switch back to Teachers Health, will I have to reserve waiting periods?
You won’t have to reserve waiting periods unless you rejoin Teachers Health on a higher level of cover than you had with us before.
