Building our brand with the help of our Ambassador, Kurt Fearnley
As we continue to spread the word about our fund, we’ve launched a new campaign starring multi-talented Teachers Health member Kurt Fearnley, who’s been our Ambassador for over 10 years.
Most people know Kurt as a TV presenter, disability advocate and one of Australia’s most successful athletes – after all he’s won multiple gold medals at the Paralympics and Commonwealth Games as well as winning over 40 marathons. As if that isn’t enough, Kurt was also awarded 2019 NSW Australian of the Year for his sporting and advocacy achievements, and has even crawled the 95 kilometres of the Kokoda track!
What’s lesser known is that Kurt himself is a PDHPE teacher, and a passionate supporter of public education as a teacher, past student and dad.
So inspired by his teachers, he became one himself
Kurt’s own experience is a testament to the lasting impact that teachers can have on their students. As he says, some of the most pivotal moments of his life were given to him by teachers, who he believes can change a child’s world.
Growing up in the small NSW country town of Carcoar, it was Kurt’s primary school principal who took a stand to keep Kurt in the local school because he believed it was good for Kurt, the other students and the whole community. That principal was just one of many committed teachers who set Kurt on a path he could never have imagined himself.
As Kurt explains, “I wouldn’t be who I am today without some incredible teachers who were able to show me that my disability didn’t define my future. In fact, qualifying as a teacher myself is one of my proudest achievements.”
Highlighting the dedication of school staff during tough times
Our new campaign was launched to coincide with the recent coverage of the 2020 Paralympics, which Kurt co-hosted as part of the commentary team.
In the first ad of the series, Kurt highlights what a challenging time it’s been for everyone. However, the resilience teachers have shown in the face of all the changes – while keeping students safe and engaged – proves what champions they really are. And we couldn’t agree more!
